Week in Holland

I apologize that this post won't be as in-depth as I would like for a week spent in Holland. I honestly could have written a post about each day since we did so much, but as I'm running short on time for the blog, this must suffice. We of course saw a ton of family and too few friends since we always seemed a bit short on time.

We spent a great deal of time playing with Carsten's cousins at Mom and Dad Huisman's house. They have a terrific basement with lovely toys for the kids to all play in. I think Carsten loved it, and I enjoyed watching all four kids interact. They also got to play on the tricycles and go to the park together. It was so fun to watch and I can't wait to see them all together again next summer. Here's some photos of cousin time:

Playing in the basement.
Tricycle time! Carsten didn't quite get how to work the pedals, but he scooted around just fine :).
All four kids together!
Best way to get them ALL to sit still: have Grandpa mow the lawn.
LOVE this photo of Carsten swinging at the park.
Snack time!
So much fun to see them grow up together!
Carsten also got to see Aunt Barb who brought one of her super nice border collies to play with Carsten. Carsten even got to throw Bryte a frisbee and being the amazing dog that she is, she waited until he threw it a couple feet and then retrieved it. What a good sport! Here's a couple of photos:

Carsten, Aunt Barb, and Bryte.

All the Huisman's in Zeeland took off on Thursday to go to the Kalamazoo Air Zoo, which was an amazing air museum with some fun rides in it. It was all indoors, so the fact that it was a cold day didn't matter at all! Carsten was a little unsure of the rides, but as long as he could hold my hand he was fine and even enjoyed himself. We all enjoyed seeing all of the planes, and as always when you have little kids I would have enjoyed reading a little bit more about the individual planes. Oh well :). It was a super fun day to spend with family, and we will have to go back next summer with Andy who will appreciate the airplanes so much more than I did :). Here's a few photos:

Getting ready to ride the airplanes!
Getting ready to ride the hot air baloons!
We found a helicopter!
Zachary and Carsten driving the helicopter!
Sitting in a cockpit playing with the buttons.
Blue Angels cockpit :).
Carsten's first 4D movie! And first movie in a theatre as well. He seemed to enjoy it although he wouldn't leave the glasses on.
We also got to see Uncle Luke quite a bit :). We played at Kollen Park which was extremely wet, and also got to play marble works which Luke and I enjoyed putting together immensely. I think Carsten was only mildly interested :). We also got to go out to eat twice with Luke which is a rare treat for us! Here's a few photos:

Kollen Park was kind of like a splash pad.
Carsten got quite wet despite our best efforts.
Marble works!
We are totally getting something like this soon. For Andy and I. Not for Carsten.
We loved seeing all of our Huisman family plus Luke and we're anxious to get back to Holland next summer and see everyone again :). Miss you all!

Cleveland

So I'm officially a month behind on the blog, and just so you know, it's probably not going to get caught up anytime soon. We in the middle of selling most of our Swiss furnishings and getting ready for our move to Zurich for the month of December. Then we have only one more "easy" move to NY in Jan. :)

So, we left off in the month of October sending Andy off to Switzerland while Mom and Dad Huisman graciously drove ~7 hrs to transport Carsten and I to Cleveland, OH, where we got to spend 2 nights with Jed, Lisa, Linnea, and Julia. Here's a photo of Carsten sporting the new headphones and DVD player (he's watching "Bob the Builder" of course):
He only left the headphones on for a few minutes. Oh well, we all got to enjoy Bob.
Even though we were really only there for one full day, we managed to fit a lot in :). We first went to Mom and Dad's hotel where we all swam in the warmest pool ever. Seriously. The kids and adults all enjoyed it quite a bit :). Here's a few photos:
Carsten and Julia
Group shot #1. Poor Julia :).
Group shot #2. Much better :).
We then had lunch and naps back at the Koops' residence. After naps we loaded everyone up and went to a nearby farm/orchard that had tons of play equipment, food (free apples!), and overall just a lot of things to do :). We were lucky that it was a pretty nice afternoon so we stayed for a couple of hours. Carsten loved seeing all the tractors, and he also enjoyed following Linnea around. I think his favorite thing was the covered sandbox that had all sorts of tractors in it to play with. Julia's favorite thing was to eat the sand in the sandbox :). Here's a bunch of photos:

Tractor ride to the family fun area.
There were so many tractors for Carsten to 'drive'!!
He was a bit distraught that this hay was on the ground instead of in the hay bales. He tried to fix it. :)
Yet another tractor to drive. :)
'Hang on Grandpa!!'
They had push-carts. Go Grandpa!
The amazing sandbox with tractors.
This little cutie is a sand eater.
Our best shot of all three kids at the farm. I believe Julia actually got a little stuck in this :).
We then went home and ordered Chinese take out (yay!!) for supper. We all slept, got up, packed, and then rolled out for our grand finally of playing at a terrific park in Cleveland. The weather pretty good, and since it was Sunday morning, we had the park to ourselves :). The kids had a fun time playing, and it was nice to have Carsten get some energy out before we set out for the 5-6 hr drive to Holland. Here's a few photos:
The sandbox is always a hit for Carsten. Especially when it has a 'BIG digger!'.
Swings are also fun!
fun teeter totter for all the kids!
Fun teeter totter for all the kids plus ME!
A group photo at the cute little train.
Thanks for a lovely weekend Jed, Lisa, Linnea, and Julia! We loved spending time in Cleveland and look forward to more soon :). We said our goodbyes and then got on the road. Here's a few photos of Carsten on the trip:
He only really slept for about 30 min. We need to figure out how to get longer naps in the car for our road trips. Any suggestions?
He enjoyed his quiet book from Grandma Bonnie!
We got into Holland and quickly unpacked. Then we headed right out the door to Jeff and Amanda's house for a yummy dinner. The kids had a good time playing together :).
The boys looking out the window.
What a fun weekend! AND we got to see the whole Huisman side in ONE day (minus Andy :( ).

"No standing, daddy"

Tonight we sold our TV to a couple of people from the internet.  In preparation for them coming, I took down the shelf over the TV (which was wall-mounted).  Without thinking, I stepped up on the futon to reach the shelf and wasn't paying too much attention to the noises Carsten was making until I felt his little hand pulling me down.  "No standing, daddy," he declared.  We never let him stand up on the futon, and I guess he thought the rule should apply to everyone.

We got the stepstool and Carsten "helped" me take things down by carrying each individual part over to Natalie. When I walked away for a minute, Carsten got up on the stepstool and started checking out the TV. I think we are going to need to have some projects around the house for him to help with at our place in NY!

A few stories about Carsten

B-O-B please

You know that thing that parents do where they spell something so their kid doesn't know what they are talking about?  Carsten loves Bob the Builder. He gets so excited about it we can't even say the word Bob.  Frankly, it's a good thing that we don't have any friends nearly named Bob, because we could never talk about them.

Yesterday, Carsten looked at me and said: "Bob please daddy."

I told him: "It's too early to watch Bob, we just got up!"

Carsten, after thinking for a moment: "B-O-B please daddy!"

Oh dear.  I think we might be in trouble.  He knows our secrets.

Is there a baby in there?

Periodically we have been mentioning to Carsten that his mother is going to have another baby, just on general principles so that he isn't too surprised when someone else takes center stage.  Usually he doesn't respond, but last night, he really seemed to understand.  He pointed to Natalie's tummy and said "There a baby in there!" after we mentioned it.  He patted her tummy and said "Hello baby!"

Then things got a little confusing.  A few minutes later, Carsten pointed to Natalie's leg and exclaimed: "There's a baby in there!"  We tried to correct him but he still points to random parts of Natalie to declare her maternity.

Then things got a little more confusing.  Carsten ran and jumped on to my (Andy's) tummy.  "There's a baby in there," he exclaimed. I had to tell him that only mommies have babies, not daddies.

Finally, things reached their ultimate confusion. Carsten and I were playing and I tickled his tummy. He looked down at his belly and said questioningly, "is there a baby in there?"

Don't drink the bath water

There are only a few rules at bathtime.  Don't stand up in the tub and don't drink the bath water are pretty much at the top of the list. We try really hard not to drink bathwater. We even get a cup of drinking water every night, so that if Carsten is thirsty there is an appropriate beverage right at hand.

Once, a long time ago, the bath was a little too warm. I poured cold water into the bath, and used Carsten's little green bucket, a bath toy, to spread it around.  After I cooled the bath down, I gave him a bucket full of cold water.  For almost every night since then, he has asked for, and gotten, a bucket of cold water.  Before he could talk, he would hand me the bucket and coo meaningfully. Eventually we taught him sign language for cold, and I made him show me the sign to get cold water.  Lately, he has to say "cold water please daddy" to get a bucket.  For some reason, the temptation to drink cold water straight from the bucket is especially strong.

Two nights ago, Carsten bent his head down and put his mouth to the bucket of cold water.  I reminded him not to drink bath water, but he came up with a mouthful.  He opened his mouth and proudly exclaimed: "I spit it out!" I was not sure what to do, so I told him "Good job, you didn't drink the water. But it would be even better if you didn't put the water in your mouth at all."  After that, he spent the rest of the bath putting his chin in the water and almost getting it in his mouth.

Tonight, as usual, Carsten got his bucket of cold water. Almost immediately he bent down and got a big mouthful of cold water.  He sat straight up and looked at me to see what I would do. Just as I started to say something, he spit it out on his own, but with very little force.  The result was a large mouthful of almost-cold water running down his chest. He looked so shocked I just couldn't be too upset with him. And after all, he didn't break the rule. He just came this close which is exactly what I would have done myself when I was his age.

You're a good kid, Carsten.

Schenectady, New York

Our next stop on our month long adventure was Schenectady, New York, which will be our new home in January. Andy's parents graciously agreed to meet us there to spend time with us and to care for Carsten so Andy and I could get more things done while we were there. We spent the week seeing a few rentals, trying to get to know the neighborhoods, test driving cars, buying a minivan, meeting with Union, and spending time with family. It was a super busy week trying to do all of these things, and it was made a bit harder by Carsten's slow adjustment to the new time zone. We were expecting him to adjust easily like he did last Christmas since he really doesn't sleep on planes, but he really did not this time and it was a really rough first four nights in the states.

We met with Union College for two days, and we left feeling energized and excited about the opportunities for both of us there. They have a great campus and a fantastic chemistry department. This was especially great for me because I had never been there before, so I was feeling nervous about what our future place of employment was going to be. Andy will be starting as a chemistry professor in January, and I'll start in the fall of 2013 teaching adjunct in chemistry. Here's a few photos of Union College:
Union College!!
We had an excellent tour of the campus, but it was cold!
We spent a lot of time test-driving different vehicles to see which ones fit our needs (and Andy!) the best. We ended up choosing and buying a used 2012 Toyota Sienna AWD minivan!
Our new minivan!
We also spent some time exploring the Schenectady area and one night right before we had dinner at a restaurant on the Mohawk River, the sun came out lighting up this bridge for us. The weather was pretty cold and wet the entire time we were there, so this was a nice change.

In Schenectady, our new home!
Grandma Bonnie and Grandpa Tom did an amazing job of caring for Carsten while we went about our errands. It was so nice to get so many things done during the week, and I know Carsten enjoyed some good quality time with his grandparents. We also got to celebrate an early Christmas with them since we will be in Switzerland for the Holiday season. Thanks so much Mom and Dad for coming out to NY!!

Christmas came early this year for us! Thanks Mom and Dad!
Mom Huisman makes these wonderful quiet books for her grandkids on their 2nd birthday. Carsten loved it!

We did manage to fit in some family time as well, and we took advantage of the indoor hotel pool since the weather was so poor. However, we only went in once because it was SO COLD. Carsten was blue and shivering when we got him out after about 20 minutes. I endeavored to touch as little of the water as I could :). Andy was the better parent and got in all the way with Carsten. Mom Huisman also got in, but Dad Huisman wisely chose the hot tub over the cold pool.
Coldest indoor hotel pool ever.

The week left us exhausted, but also excited about the opportunities in Schenectady. We are still working on a place to rent, but hopefully we'll sort that out before our move in January :).
