Bellinzona

On Saturday, we had the privilege of taking a trip with Megan and Luke to Bellinzona, which is in the Italian-speaking portion of Switzerland. We decided to go there, even though it was a 3.5 hr trip 1-way, because everywhere else in Switzerland was going to be rainy. In Bellinzona, we had beautiful sun and fall weather. Bellinzona is known for its set of three castles which make up a UNESCO world heritage site. The castles guarded an important intersection of three passes through the Alps, and originally was a part of Italy until it surrendered to the Swiss a few hundred years ago. Our trip there was fantastic, especially since Carsten really was enjoying looking out the window of the train at first and then afterwards, he played quietly with us in his seat. He knows from our train trips into Zurich that you cannot get up when the train is moving, and for now, he still follows that rule which made for a very pleasant trip. Once we got into Bellizona, Carsten was ready for adventure and spent a good portion of the time we were in Castle Grande (the lowest and biggest castle) climbing steps, exploring, and running around; he was bound and determined to do everything that we were doing. We spent a long time exploring the extensive walls (has a unique double wall) and grounds of the castle, and here are some photos:

Castle Grande as seen from the ground. It's built on a natural rock hill.
We took the elevator up. Don't let this pretty lady fool you. :)
Carsten was SO excited to be able to walk around and explore.
photo time!
You can see the other two castles up on the next hill.
Family photo opp. Cheesey Carsten. :)
Megan and Luke!
We climbed up the tall tower to see what we could see. Carsten climbed up all by himself!
These are the nicest/safest stairs we've climbed in a castle or church :).

Carsten got really thirsty while we were walking. I had made the error of leaving his water in the stroller, which we had ditched a while back. Whoops. This is him enjoying his water after we got back to the stroller.
After exploring the outside, we decided to try out the museum inside the castle. I wasn't super impressed by the coin and art collection they had displayed, but the movie was good because of both the content and its ability to put Carsten to sleep. I had the foresight to put him in the Ergo carrier during the museum, so after the movie we then walked around the grounds for just a bit more and then went to a church in the downtown area. Carsten only slept about 30 min, so that's all we had time for :). Here's a couple of photos:

After Carsten woke up, we all felt the need for some gelato, so we found a stand and got some! It was YUMMY. We had one tiramisu and one strawberry to share as a family, and boy, it was good. Carsten kept asking for more. After walking around the town a bit, we decided to head up to the second castle, which was a pretty good hike up some stairs. We ditched our stroller, and then dragged Carsten up the hill to the castle (understandably, he wasn't quite as excited about the stairs as he had been earlier in the day). The castle was very pretty, and the view of Castle Grande and the town of Bellinzona were both lovely. The museum of this castle was really not worth the money as it mostly just had old pots without a lot of information (such as dates) to go with it. Plus, Carsten was not in the mood for it, which always influences our perspective :). Here's some photos of the middle castle (we did NOT hike up to the top one, so these are the last castle photos, I promise :) ):

Pretty Middle Castle. And no, that's not the official name.
Pretty.
We climbed the wall, and it was nicely secured except where Carsten could have possibly fallen through to the ground where those bars are. We got him down rather quickly.
The highest castle. No way we were dragging Carsten up there :).

So, I'm a little sorry for the massive number of photos in this post, but I just have to post this sequence of photos of Andy and Carsten running down the hill on the middle castle grounds.

We then hiked back down to the town where we thankfully found our stroller where we had left it. We decided that we were hungry and wanted to sit down, so we found a lovely pizzeria off the main town square and had Italian (well, Swiss Italian) pizzas! The waiter was really nice and spoke English, which was very helpful. We had yummy desserts after pizza, and then got complimentary mandarin liquor to help digest the food. I understand lemon liquor is very common in Italy, so it was very similar. It was the perfect meal to end a perfect day :). Here's a couple of photos:

Carsten thought this should be sat on.
So, I took the opportunity to get a photo in while he was sitting still :).
We ran onto a train that got us home pretty quickly (only 2 stops before Zurich), and Carsten mostly just sat on our laps and watched Bob and played on the ipod. We got home at 10 pm (late night!) and Carsten fell asleep on impact as we never heard any noises from him. It was an amazing day, and even more impressively, Carsten did super the entire day despite 2 long train rides, many steps, and an extremely short nap. Granted, we can only do that every once in a while, but still, it's nice to have a trooper kiddo for our adventures :). Thanks for going on a lovely day trip with us Megan and Luke!

Megan and Luke came to Zurich!

Last week Thursday I had the privilege of meeting Megan Vivian and her boyfriend, Luke, at the Zurich airport. It was SO fun to get a Megan hug :). We took the train back to Zurich, secured their luggage in a locker, and then went on a walking tour of Zurich. We saw the three main churches, and I got them oriented to the town so they could spend the afternoon in Zurich while I took Carsten home for his nap. We met Andy for lunch, which consisted of brats of course, and we ate them by the lake since it was a nice day. Here's a few photos:

Carsten enjoyed playing in the churches :).

After lunch, Andy headed back to work, I went back home with Carsten for naptime, and then Megan and Luke went on a lake cruise. After nap, Carsten and I were playing outside when Megan and Luke surprised us. They made it to Egg!! We then went on a walk to the church to see the relatively clear mountains, and then got fresh bread at the store for fondue which we had for supper. I could hardly tell that Megan and Luke were jet-lagged - they did great! Here are a few more photos:

The following day we sent them to Lucerne and Mt. Rigi while we went about our normal day so that we could travel the next day with Carsten :).

Carsten's 2 year stats

Carsten had his 2 year check up today, and unless he gets sick, this was his last visit to his Swiss doctor. The doctor was impressed by his size, and actually, the nurse had accidentally marked his growth chart stats as a 3 year old (whoops!). The doctor was also impressed by his talking - we've heard him say at least 5 words in a sentence before, although 3-4 words together is more common. She said that he was very advanced, which is always what a parent wants to hear :). Carsten's 2 year old stats are (drum roll please):

Weight: 33.8 lbs (>90th percentile)
Height: 36.8 inches (>90th percentile)

Carsten also received 1 more vaccination, which I understand to be the last one for quite a while (yay!). They give us topical patches to numb the area for the shot before we go, and it really seems to help because Carsten didn't cry at all again. After the shot he just got down and played with the toys in his doctor's office. What a kiddo :). All in all, a great check up!

Happy 30th Birthday Andy!!

Happy 30th Birthday Andy! I could not have asked for a better best friend, husband, and father for our child. Words cannot simply express how much you mean to me :). During this decade of your life, we will move internationally to New York, and students will start calling you Dr. Huisman as you teach them all about chemistry. It's going to be a great start to your 30s!
Happy Birthday!

Carsten - 21-24 months

Carsten Andrew - 2 years old
I haven't given an update on Carsten in a while - mostly because of our crazy travel schedule. I know, it's a rough life. So, here we go:

Talking: He's talking in sentences since he was about 21 months. The day before Mom and Dad Huisman left at the end of May, Carsten said his first sentence. Andy asked him a question about who planted the flowerbox, and he said "I did it!"So, there we have it. Along those same lines, he told his first story to us. Here's what happened to create the story: my earring had fallen out onto the floor and he pointed to it and said 'I missed it!' (2nd sentence btw). And then I said, "Thank you Carsten. You found Mommy's earring!" And then he replied, "I found it!" (3rd sentence). Later on, he found me to tell me his story and said 'Missed it!', and then he pointed to the floor and said 'I found it!'. This is his first story to us, and he's repeated it several times since then, which we love. Actually, when I wear those earrings now, he usually points to the floor and either says 'I missed it' or 'I found it'. I find this very adorable. All in all, it's super fun to have him talking with us and it makes me fell a little less like I'm just talking to the stroller when we're out because he now replies back to me. He also now can express many preferences and needs. He also can and does repeat pretty much everything we say now, so we have to be a little careful sometimes! :)

Sleeping: He's a pretty good sleeper. Except that his naps aren't always as long as I'd like or as long as he needs. Also, he still seems to be a pretty light sleeper, which necessitates that nap time is a 'quiet' time for me. He's still sleeping in his crib and to date, has not climbed out despite being quite tall for the crib. I think he's pretty good at following rules even when I'm not around (see next point).

Type A personality: There's been a few indicators that we have a bit of a Type A personality on our hands (no one should be surprised by this). 1) He generally follows rules even when we're not around and will even go so far as to tell himself 'NO' when he's thinking about doing something that he isn't supposed to do (we LOVE this and hope it sticks around for a while :) ). 2) He puts things away in the right spot, and insists that it be done that way. When Andy does it incorrectly, he says 'uh oh' and puts it in the correct spot. 3) He points out the things that are out of place. When we leave a child lock undone, he says 'UH OH' until he gets our attention so we can come over and close it, and he doesn't open the drawer even though we've left it unlocked.

Favorites: His favorite thing of all is his blanket, which we usually require to stay in his crib but sometimes he's allowed to snuggle it around the house. The spatula has been a 2nd rate toy for a while and has been replaced with his toy tractor and digger, both of which were Andy's toys when he was little. Carsten LOVES all things related to construction equipment (especially diggers and dump trucks), airplanes, helicopters, and trains. This makes our train rides go very quickly as Switzerland seems to have a lot of construction at all times. At home we see a lot of helicopters and airplanes, so we're constantly running from one side of the house to the other so we can see them.
Digger just down the street that Carsten loves to see.
'Look over there!'
Memory: He has an excellent memory and he's also developing a good spatial memory. He knows where all the diggers and cranes are on the Forchbahn and tells us when they are missing (even for weeks after it is gone). He's also really good at remembering things that he's not supposed to do, and even better, he generally doesn't do them. He can now 'fill in the blank' for most of his books and the songs that we sing him, which is fun because now everything is very interactive.

Playing: He loves to play outside and he's also really good about playing at church nursery and at the gym. In fact, he loves to go and today when we were leaving the grocery store he asked to go play at the gym which is right behind the grocery store. Carsten also loves playing on our deck, and he especially loves to play on our playground right outside (there's trucks!).
Playing trucks on our playground.
Playing on the deck with water.
Following directions: He can now follow multiple step directions, especially when going outside is involved (like 1) put your blankie away and 2) find some socks). He's also very good about holding our hands when we're outside walking, and this is nice because now we do not have to take the stroller everywhere.

Teeth: He has everything except his 2 year molars, but never fear, those are coming in at the present moment which has resulted in some interrupted sleep. He's also pretty good about letting us brush his teeth twice a day.

Scholastic achievements: Carsten has known all of his shapes since about 21 months, and he has known his colors since about 22 months. At 23 months, he could count to 10 verbally with us, and now at 24 months, he recognizes all the written numbers from 1-10.

Size: We won't know his exact measurements until his doctors appointment in about a week, but I can tell you that he's in 3T clothes and has been since he was 21 months. The 3T clothes fit him quite well, so who knows how much longer he'll be in them :).

Cats: It seems almost everyone has cats here, and the cats are allowed to be out of doors most of the time. Now that we've been here a bit, I know which cats below to whom, so I feel comfortably letting Carsten touch the cats that are nice. And he is THRILLED to be able to pet the cats. He's very gentle, and has only pulled the tail one time. :)
We taught Carsten to drag a stick so the cat will follow him :).
Happy Kid: He really makes the most of life and takes every opportunity to enjoy it. Carsten always keeps busy with something, which sometimes makes him hard to keep up with, but overall, I enjoy it very much :). He also seems to have a good sense of humor and he likes to be goofy (see photos below).
Step 1: Insert extremely large piece of banana into mouth.
Step 2: See if Mom and Dad will laugh (we try very hard not to).
Cheesy smile.
Blowing out his birthday candles (he did it too!).
Loving his chocolate cupcake.
We anticipate a lot more fun as Carsten is two, and he'll experience some major life changes as we move to New York in January. We love our little buddy!
